GHIC - BARDA Ventures Year 2 Partnership Report

GHIC and BARDA Ventures celebrate their second year of partnership to accelerate medical countermeasure innovation through venture investments. 

In 2021, to better prepare for future health emergencies, BARDA Ventures and GHIC launched a 10-year public-private partnership to accelerate the development of medical countermeasures that address gaps in global health security. Through this collaborative venture capital partnership, GHIC and BARDA Ventures work hand-in-hand to strengthen health security and support an ecosystem of innovators and entrepreneurs advancing the development and commercialization of mission-aligned technologies.

As captured in the Year 2: Venture Partnership Report, GHIC and BARDA Ventures have assessed health security gaps and evaluated investment opportunities across a spectrum of health security priority areas, including:

• threat detection and situational awareness,
• accelerated medical countermeasure development,
• rapid scale-up of manufacturing capability, and
• fast and equitable distribution of medical countermeasures.

With support from the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA), part of the Administration for Strategic Preparedness and Response within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, GHIC has sourced and evaluated over 500 companies and made 12 mission-relevant investments in the global health security portfolio.  Working together, GHIC and BARDA Ventures look forward to accelerating future innovations to address the urgent health security challenges of today and tomorrow.

About BARDA Ventures:

BARDA Ventures is a program within BARDA’s Division of Research, Innovation, and Ventures (DRIVe). The team works closely with GHIC to prioritize efforts within the partnership that have the highest potential impact on BARDA’s mission, managing engagements with BARDA’s deep pool of technical experts as needed to evaluate prospective investments or advise portfolio companies, and coordinating with leadership within DRIVe and across BARDA to integrate investment activities to complement other BARDA programs.
